I didn’t knew a lot about Wifredo Lam.
So an exhibition with his art was highly welcome, especially after the Christmas and New Year’s Eve. As it is the first time Centre George Pompidou is organizing a retrospective of the cuban artist, I was sure I will be spoiled. The last retrospective was done in 1982, the year the artist passed away, done by the Museum of Modern Art of the city of Paris.
Wifredo Óscar de la Concepción Lam y Castilla (1902- 1982), was born in Sagua La Grande, Cuba, from a chinese father and a half black-half spanish mother. He travelled a lot and lived in Madrid, Marseille, Paris and Albissola.
For long time considered as the “cuban artist”, or Picasso’s student, Lam and his complexe imaginary univers can be appreciated and translated through this exhibition who shows clearly that Lam was much more than this.
